Drylining Birkenhead

Birkenhead Drylining FAQ

How long does dry lining take to install?

Typical Birkenhead installation times for September 2026:

- Single room (walls + ceiling, ~12-20 m²): 2-3 days install + 1-2 days jointing/skim - Three-bed terrace (whole house, ~80-120 m² wall area): 5-8 working days - Hamilton Square apartment (full re-line, 60-80 m²): 4-6 days - Commercial office fit-out (200 m²): 1-2 weeks - Large commercial (500-1,000 m²): 2-4 weeks - HMO conversion (4-6 bed): 1-2 weeks

On top of the install itself, allow 3-7 days for a full skim coat to dry before any decoration goes on. Taping and jointing — a dry-finish alternative — is faster, typically 1-2 days with no drying window, and is the usual choice on commercial Cat A fit-outs in Hamilton Square's commercial district and the newer office stock at Bromborough and Wirral Waters.

The biggest programme variables in Birkenhead:

Access. Several of the Grade I listed Hamilton Square tower blocks share a single goods lift with booked time slots. We schedule around it, but it can add half a day per floor. The period Georgian stonework common across Claughton, Oxton and Prenton also restricts fixing methods — dot-and-dab or mechanical rather than direct-bond — which adds roughly 10% to the labour time compared with modern masonry.

Materials. Plasterboard from Travis Perkins Birkenhead or CCF Merseyside is normally next-day; British Gypsum direct is 1-3 days. We book the delivery for the day before we start so the boards are acclimatised on site.

First-fix coordination. Electrical, plumbing and HVAC (we use Vent-Axia Wirral stockists for extract fans) need to be on site before the boards go up. Where those trades are sequenced separately, add 2-4 days.

Permissions. Article 4 directions covering parts of Rock Ferry, Birkenhead Central and Tranmere mean an HMO conversion may need planning consent for layout changes — typically 1 week of programme, sometimes longer if consultees object.

For most domestic jobs we hand over a written programme with every quote so you can book other trades and decorators around the dry-lining window.
